LPN PICKS: Dr. Mütter's Marvels
Sep 2
This week's pick comes from our Administrator Michelle;
Thomas Dent Mütter, an eccentric and brilliant doctor who paved the way for modern surgery techniques, is a fascinating man. He added the umlaut to his last name, just because he could. I could not read about him fast enough. This book is also full of diagrams and medical drawings, and even a photo of a huge impacted colon. But it is not solely worth reading for the sensational photos. Apotwicz uses Dr. Mütter as a window to society at the turn of the century. You can see not only the journey of one strange doctor, but the evolution of medical thought to a (slightly) more compassionate form.
